BES's current shareholder structure derives from the Bank's privatization in 1991/92, when the Espírito Santo Financial Group regained control of the Bank with strategic partner Crédit Agricole. BES has since entered a number of major strategic agreements, notably with Portugal Telecom and Bradesco.
Bespar aggregates the shareholdings of Espírito Santo Financial Group and Credit Agricole: ESFG has 67.4% of Bespar and Crédit Agricole has the remaining 32.6%.
