Banco Espírito Santo is a patron of Arte Contemporânea de Elvas Museum, a project of the local municipality which opened to the public in July 2007. This is the only museum in Portugal that exhibits exclusively contemporary Portuguese art.
The only space in the country with a permanent exhibition of contemporary art, the Museum was inaugurated by the Isabel Pires de Lima, the Minister for Culture and includes the legacy of António Cachola, a local collector, comprising more than 300 pieces by 40 national artists, featuring, among others, Adriana Molder and André Gomes. António Cachola's collection is exclusively national, encompassing sculpture, decoration, photography and painting. It aims to provide a global vision of the historical and productive reality arising among artists revealed or established between the 80s of the last century and the present time.
Proximity to the Badajoz contemporary art museum is considered an asset in so far as it may facilitate the development of projects and the interchange of works of art. One of the Museum's objectives is to organise cultural and artistic training courses, provide information and training about the initiatives carried out, issue quality editions, make guided tours and arrange workshops for school children from the first cycle to secondary education, as well as for target and specialised publics.
The sponsorship of the museum is part of an innovating policy developed by the Espírito Santo Group to promote access of the public to the national culture, which is inspired on the Group's long standing tradition of supporting the arts.
