BESphoto, an initiative of the Banco Espírito Santo in partnership with the Berardo Collection Museum, was launched 6 years ago with the objective of rewarding Portuguese artists or those resident in Portugal, who present works related with photography within a given period.
This initiative also involves the holding of a joint exhibition of the artists previously selected by the Selection Jury and culminates with the award of the BESphoto Prize to the winning artist chosen by the Award Jury.

Internationalization: a new step
The BES photo Prize, which has already become the main contemporary art prize in Portugal, acquired international status in its 7th edition (BESphoto 2011) by broadening the scope of selection of the artists whose nationality, as from this edition, may be Portuguese, Brazilian or that of one of the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOPs).
As a result of this internationalization, the BES photo exhibition will be transported to the Tomie Ohtake Institute after being shown in the Berardo Museum.
The Banco Espírito Santo, Berardo Museum and the Tomie Ohtake Institute have therefore come together to promote creativity and the inclusion of Portuguese-speaking contemporary plastic artists in the international panorama and with the ambition of creating what will be the most important contemporary art prize in the South Atlantic.
9th edition of BESphoto
Pedro Motta is the winner of the 9th edition of the BES Photo Prize, an initiative of Banco Espírito Santo in partnership with the Berardo Collection Museum, together with a new partner, the Tomie Ohtake Institute, which will present the exhibition in São Paulo, as from the 18th of June.
