Banco Espírito Santo is the first Portuguese bank to join the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI), the global leading sustainability benchmark. BES will join the selected group of 15 banks listed in the DJSI Europe.
BES obtained a total of 79 points in the selection process; well above the 53 points average for the banks being evaluated.
Following a best-in-class approach, the DJSI measures the performance of the world’s sustainability leaders, being a reference benchmark for the capital markets. The over USD 8 billion assets under management linked to the DJSI demonstrates the relevance of the benchmark for asset managers and asset owners, who wish to reflect their sustainability convictions within their portfolios.
BES was already the only Portuguese bank listed in the Footsie4Good, another benchmark for the leading sustainable companies. However, the admission in the DJSI, the most demanding classification in terms of sustainable performance at a global level, reflects BES increasing commitment to integrate sustainability criteria in the Bank’s management and activity.
BES consistent, transversal and in-depth work in sustainability and in social responsibility has granted the leading role in the Portuguese Banking Sector; as well as international recognition, materialised in the bank’s ranking in both DJSI and FTSE4Good.
Independent and external recognition as sustainability leaders assumes a key factor for BES stakeholders, namely institutional investors, shareholders, clients and workers, whose concern and orientation towards sustainability and social responsibility values is growing.
BES is investing in the reduction of the carbon footprint, increasing portfolio of products that take in consideration financial inclusion criteria and/or environmental concerns, as well as taking a relevant contribution in renewable energy and biodiversity conservation.
About Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
